During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Free buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Core Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
